Modi phones as PM, President denounce deadly Lahore attack

ISLAMABAD: Expressing deep grief over the loss of precious human lives in Lahore’s deadly suicide attack, President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday condemned the ‘cowardly act’.

In separate statements, the two leaders said that such cowardly acts cannot shake nation's resolve against terrorism. The prime minister also directed to provide best possible medical facilities to the injured.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned PM Nawaz Sharif and expressed grief over the loss of precious lives in the Lahore blast. He said, “Coward terrorists targeted innocent women and children.”

The Indian premier said targeting women and children was highly regrettable and condemnable, adding that people of India stand with their Pakistani brethren in this hour of grief.

At least 69 people were killed and over 300 others injured in a deadly suicide explosion near Lahore’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park earlier in the evening.

The suspected suicide attacker blew himself up in the parking space of the recreational park. A large number of people including women and children were present at the park due to weekly holiday.

Pakistan Army troops were deployed soon after the attack in the Punjab capital's Allama Iqbal Town.
