PAT files disqualification reference against PM Nawaz in ECP

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) on Thursday submitted a reference to the Election Commission Pakistan seeking Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's disqualification over concealment of assets.

The application was submitted by PAT lawyers’ wing leader Ishtiaq Chaudhry.

The reference claimed that the prime minister had not revealed his assets in the nomination papers submitted to the ECP during the general elections held in 2013.

The prime minister falls short of the Article number 62 and 63, two clauses in the constitution which deal with the character of the prime minister, the reference stated.

Ishtiaq Chaudhry said that the premier is no longer ‘Sadiq and Ameen’( honest and trustworthy).

The PAT leader further said that the PM did not mention certain assets in the tax returns he had filed.

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) have already submitted references with the ECP against the prime minister, seeking his disqualification over the same reasons.

The PAT chief Tahir ul Qadri returned to Pakistan from Canada residence this month. On June 17 he held a protest at Lahore's Mall Road to demand justice for the victims of the Model Town carnage. The protest was attended by a large number of his supporters.

In 2013 the PAT chief held a 120 day protest at Islamabad's D-Chowk demanding the Prime Minister's resignation over the massacre which killed many of his supporters in the Lahore Model Town carnage.
