KARACHI: Law enforcement agencies on Saturday took into custody three teachers of the Karachi University from outside the Karachi Press Club, when they were all set to hold a press conference in support of arrested MQM London leader Dr. Hassan Zafar Arif.

"Mehr Afroz Murad, Dr Riaz and Naghmana Sheikh were detained from outside the Karachi Press Club," said Dr Naveen Haider, member of KU Teachers Society. "They were taken to the Rangers Headquarters."

"This is against freedom of expression. These teachers are not affiliated with any political party," she said.

Naveen said that they wanted to hold a presser in support of Dr Hassan Zafar Arif, for he had taught them at the University of Karachi. "Dr Arif's health is not good and he be released immediately," she demanded.

In October 2016, Rangers took MQM-London interim Rabita Committee members, Professor Hasan Zafar Arif, Kunwar Khalid Younus and Amjadullah Khan, into custody from outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC).

They were later booked on charges of instigating masses to violence and over slogans against the country.

Naveen Haider also called for the release of detained teachers.

'Detained teachers not affiliated with MQM-London'

Meanwhile, the MQM-London said the detained teachers are not affiliated with it, according to a statement issued by the party spokesman.

They are neither member of the party, nor they held a party position, he said.
