NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi has stated that the granting of discriminatory waivers to some states deeply compromised the rules and norms of non-proliferation.

Taking part in a debate in the UN Security Council, Lodhi claimed such compensations allowed the possibility of diverting material intended for peaceful uses to military purposes which increased proliferation risks.

She demanded the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to ensure equal treatment of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) applicants for the Group's membership by coming up with a criteria which is more objective and equitable.

The UN Disarmament Chief Izumi Nakamitsu added that strong international cooperation is needed in order to limit the access and usage weapons of mass destruction between terrorist organisations.
