LAHORE: A white tiger has been purchased by the Lahore Zoo, taking the number of white tigers in the zoo to five.

The three-year-old white tiger was flown in from Egypt Monday morning and then taken to the zoo, said authorities.

The male tiger was purchased for Rs5.3 million, the zoo authorities confirmed, adding that the funds were generated by the zoo.

Presently, a female white tiger and three cubs are present at the zoo.

While the zoo is actively seeking to attract more people and acquiring more animals, not enough attention is paid to the overall upkeep of the animals.

On November 30, a male cheetah passed away due to diarrhoea after spending just 30 days at the zoo.

The four-year-old cheetah and its female were imported from South Africa on October 29 last year. However, the female cheetah had died earlier.

The male cheetah was diagnosed with diarrhoea and despite getting treatment by experts from the University of Veterinary and Animal Science (UVAS), it did not survive.

The death of the animals raised a fresh wave of questions against the zoo management. In a mere 14 months, the zoo had lost its female elephant, Suzi, a giraffe and lion cubs, among other animals.

Speaking over the issue, Lahore Zoo Director Hassan Ali had said that the management is aware of its responsibilities. Many measures have been adopted to provide a conducive environment to the animals, he added.
