LAHORE: After a video went viral of students beating a female student’s husband on campus, another student from Punjab University claimed on Friday that Islami Jamiat Talaba students thrashed him.
According to the student named Zeeshan, the IJT students beat him up in front of the Hailey College of Commerce.
Zeeshan alleged that the incident occurred after he had verbal argument with a fellow student Aslam Ranjha, who is an IJT member.
He said that Ranjha subjected him to violence after calling his friends, adding that the incident occurred two weeks ago.
PU Professor Khalid Khan expressed no knowledge of the incident, saying that a student named Zeeshan has been expelled from the university.
“If it is the same student then a case will be registered against him as an expelled student cannot enter the premises,” said the registrar.
The PU constituted a committee to probe the incident in which a female student’s husband was thrashed. Videos circulating on social media showed some IJT students beating up a man at the university’s campus, as a large crowd of people looked on while a woman screamed at the alleged perpetrators to stop.
The man Awais, a producer at a local TV channel, had reportedly gone to pick up his wife, an MPhil student, from the campus and was having lunch with her when the said group of students gathered around the couple and started thrashing him.
According to a report prepared by the chief security officer of Punjab University detailing the incident, the couple were speaking loudly when the security guard deployed nearby went up to them and “asked them to prove their identity but in a rough manner. Due to this, Mr Awais got annoyed and started exchanging harsh words” with the guard which resulted in a “physical fight between the security guard and Mr Awais.”
