MAILSI: A man shot dead his brother-in-law in a 'watta satta' dispute in a town located in Vehari district of Punjab authorities confirmed, adding that they have arrested the suspect and recovered the murder weapon.

According to police, Sadaqat Ali and Zahoor Hussain were brothers-in-law in accordance with a 'watta satta' arrangement — Ali had married Hussain's sister and Hussain had wedded Ali's sister. However, both men's wives were upset and had been at their familial homes for the past four months.

On Tuesday, however, a panchayat — or a tribal elders' meeting — was called where both of them exchanged heated words. That spat enraged Hussain, who then went to Ali's house and opened fire on and critically wounded him.

Ali was rushed to Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, for medical attention but he succumbed to his injuries.

Officers at the Saddar police station said they have registered a first information report (FIR), which named eight suspects in total, and an investigation was initiated.
