The Karachi Development Authority (KDA), established in 1957 under the Presidential Order, has a major role to play in the development of land, housing, roads, and bridges in the port city.

The KDA was initially set up for Karachi's water supply system and building control management, but after establishment of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) and the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), KDA is responsible for planning, coordination, and rendering planning advice.

Other responsibilities of KDA include land development, design bureau, anti-encroachment and resettlement, research and publication, horticulture - Parks & Recreation, Computerization of Land Record, Land Acquisition, Land Development, Housing (Public Housing Scheme, Low Cost Housing Scheme) and Roads & Bridges.

Previously, in 1999, KDA had launched a housing scheme near North Nazimabad's Five Star Chowrangi.

This year, after a gap of 20 years, KDA is set to launch four new housing schemes in Karachi. The four new housing schemes in Karachi will be set up in Surjani Town, FB Area Block 1, Korangi, and KDA Scheme 1 for people from low-income backgrounds.

The new housing schemes, containing both flats and plots, will formally be announced soon by KDA.

The plots and flats of all the four housing schemes measure 80, 120, 200 and 240 square yards.
