ADELAIDE: Australia declared their second innings at 267 for eight to set South Africa a target of 430 runs to win the second Test in Adelaide on Sunday.
Australia skipper Michael Clarke declared halfway through the fourth day with James Pattinson not out 29 and Ben Hilfenhaus on 18.
The Proteas will have a maximum of 140 overs during the remainder of Sunday and on Monday's final day to claim an improbable victory. The odds are firmly stacked against the world number one South Africans, who need to set a new record for a successful fourth innings run chase at the Adelaide Oval.
The existing record is the 315-6 Australia scored in 1902 to overhaul England.
