ISLAMABAD: The government and opposition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have nominated former judge of Peshawar High court Justice (retd) Tariq Pervez as caretaker chief minister of the province, Geo News reported.
This was announced by Chief Minister KP Amir Haider Khan Hoti along with opposition leader Akram Durrani while addressing a press conference at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House Islamabad here Friday.
The announcement was made after mutual consensus on the name of Justice Tariq.
Hoti said Justice (retd) Tariq Pervez was ready to hold office after dissolution of the provincial assembly.
The chief minister further said the first step in elections is appointment of caretaker set. He was optimistic that other provinces will also resolve the issue with consensus.
Profile
Justice (retd) Tariq Pervez was born in Peshawar on February 15, 1948. He has been associated with the legal profession for forty years.
He worked as a lawyer in the district and high court from 1972-1997. In 1997 he was appointed as a judge of the Peshawar High Court and was elevated to Chief Justice in 2005.
He was among those judges who did not take oath under the PCO after emergency was imposed by former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf on 3 November 2007.
He was reinstated as the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court on 5 September 2008 after the success of the lawyers’ movement. Justice (retd) Pervez was elevated to the Supreme Court on 20 October 2009. He retired from this post on 14 February 2013.
