In the midst of intensifying competition in the realm of mixed-reality headsets, Meta has delayed the release of its Phoenix mixed-reality glasses to 2027.
The announcement for the delay in Meta's new mixed-reality glasses was made through an internal memo, as the smart glasses were scheduled for the second half of 2026.
Citing a report by Business Insider, Reuters reported that the postponement has been undertaken to ensure a fully polished product.
Meta executives Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns stated that the extended timeline will provide "a lot more breathing room to get the details right." The new Meta smart glasses, formerly known by the code name Puffin, weigh approximately 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and are expected to have lower-resolution displays and less powerful computing capabilities compared to premium headsets like Apple's Vision Pro.
It's noteworthy that mixed reality technology combines augmented and virtual reality (VR) to let users interact with both real-world and digital objects.
Although it is reportedly planning budget cuts of up to 30% for its metaverse initiatives, Meta's upcoming smart glasses testify to its commitment to its vision for the metaverse, as reported by Bloomberg News.
The Phoenix glasses are said to be part of Meta's broader Reality Labs division, which is responsible for the Quest mixed-reality headsets and smart glasses developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica’s Ray-Ban.
As Meta deals with these developments, the current focus seems to be on delivering a high-quality user experience in the evolving landscape of mixed reality technology.
