PS2 now most-selling game console ever, Nintendo Switch lags behind

This might be to the surprise of many, but the PlayStation 2 (PS2) is now the best-selling game console of all time, surpassing all competitors, including the Nintendo Switch which has become the second-bestselling console of all time.

As of December 31, 2025, the PS2 registered a staggering sales milestone, leaving a lasting impression in the gaming history, while having the original Switch in its two despite its recent success.

Although the original Nintendo Switch was replaced last year by the new Switch 2, it is still considerably relevant in the market.

Nintendo recently reported that the Switch sold a total of 155.37 million units, surpassing the original DS's lifetime sales of 154.02 million.

In Nintendo's fiscal 2026 alone, the Switch has sold 3.25 million units, including 1.36 million during the holiday season. This comes regardless of price hikes that struck in August 2025.

On the other hand, the Switch 2 proved a great contender against the original Switch, selling 15 million units by the end of December to signal a strong debut, and that's how it became the fastest-selling dedicated video game platform from Nintendo.

By the end of the quarter, the Switch 2 had sold a total of 17.37 million units, outbidding the Wii U’s lifetime sales of 13.56 million by a huge margin.

An enormous install base of the original Switch is still driving software sales, with Nintendo reporting 47.37 million games sold for the Switch compared to 17.31 million for the Switch 2 in the third quarter of fiscal 2026.

It must be noted that "Mario Kart World" also emerged as the top-selling title for the year, backed by its inclusion with many Switch 2 consoles.

Despite these accomplishments by competitors, the PS2's legacy remains unmatched in the gaming world.
