After almost two decades, fanfiction platform Archive of Our Own (AO3) has officially left its beta phase.

The platform has also dropped its “beta label.”

The news was announced by the Organisation for Transformative Works (OTW) on Thursday, April 2.

The non-profit, open repository was designed specifically to host transformative fanworks, including fanfiction, fanart, and podfic in 2009.

The organisation confirmed, “This is mostly cosmetic. Exiting beta doesn’t mean we’ll stop continuing to improve AO3.”

Despite leaving beta, users won’t experience any dramatic changes.

The "beta" label on the logo in the top corner of the website has been stripped away. (For April Fool's Day, they temporarily switched the label to "omega" as an endearing goodbye.)

What matters, however, is what this signifies. For 17 years, sustained improvement efforts have taken place due to volunteer input and work from contracted personnel funded by donors. Now, the OTW can claim that its software is officially stable.

During the beta era, the platform introduced features like a tagging system and downloads in multiple formats, including EPUB, MOBI, PDF, and more.

Moreover, AO3 also improved its privacy setting, enabling creators to have limited access, and introduced “Orphaning” which lets authors leave their work online even after deleting their account.

But the website made sure to emphasize that leaving beta does not mean that the process ends. The volunteer coders, as well as all community members, will keep enhancing the website every day. Fans can monitor progress via AO3's Jira projects.
