Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden was arrested early Saturday morning, June 13, in Houston on charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon.

However, hours later, the 36-year-old NBA star was released on $100 bond from Harris County Jail. He’s scheduled to appear in court on June 22.

As per the police reports, Harden was driving through downtown Houston with his friends. The incident took place at 3:40 a.m. when an officer noticed a handgun sitting in the cup holder of his Mercedes. Upon inquiry, Harden confirmed that the gun belonged to him, leading to his arrest.

In Texas, open carrying of handguns is permitted under the law, provided that the gun is always in a holster. This offense is punishable by imprisonment of one year and a fine of $4,000 as a Class A misdemeanour.

According to reports, Harden was out at a hookah lounge with his friends before the incident occurred.

The Cavaliers have issued an announcement stating that they are aware of the case and are collecting more information regarding it. There is no official statement from the NBA as of now.

The arrest made the situation difficult for Harden as a critical decision on his $42.3 million player option for next season looms. He is supposed to opt out and sign a multi-year contract with Cleveland, but the controversy might have changed things.

Harden, who won the Most Valuable Player award in 2018 and earned 11 All-Star selections, arrived at the Cavaliers via trade from the Los Angeles Clippers in February. Harden recorded a 20.5 points per game average for the Cavaliers.
