South Bay couple welcomes rare naturally conceived triplets in near record-breaking birth

A South Bay couple has welcomed a rare set of naturally conceived triplets that marks an extraordinary occurrence in medical professional.

Mother Nyla Craft and Father Marco Bernal became parents to three baby boys named Elios, Elias, and Enzo on August 18.

The date also holds special significance as it is also the father’s birthday.

Craft recalled: “Earlier this year, I went to the doctor and I saw like two different sets. I was like, oh my goodness, I’m having twins. And she was like, no, there’s three.”

Doctors described them as “mixed triplets,” a set containing an identical twin pair alongside a fraternal sibling.

The babies totaled 19.3 pounds in weight, just shy of the Guinness World Record of the heaviest living triplets.

Each baby tipped the scales at more than six pounds, which is a great start for triplets.

The birth required a significant amount of medical personnel, with about 15 specialists in the birthing room instead of the usual five.

Dr. Rohit Passi, chief of neonatology, emphasized the importance of Craft's experience by saying, "We know that black moms have a higher mortality rate and other complications during pregnancy. We take a holistic approach... Nyla is a perfect example of that."

The triplets will join the ranks of their older siblings Naya and Maceo, becoming five children under the age of five for the couple.

Craft, who once thought she couldn't get pregnant, expressed extreme gratitude for her expanding family.

"They were all crying together, and I said to myself, 'Thank God, they are all fine,'" she said.
