Rockstar Games’ extended look at the much-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI has crossed all streaming records, amassing 31.1 million views on Netflix during its debut week and topping the platform’s charts in 87 of 93 tracked countries.
The preview was 27 minutes long and debuted exclusively on Netflix on August 27 before releasing on YouTube and other platforms.
The views even surpassed the fifth season of “Outer Banks.”
Netflix has placed it under its special English-language film list, where it secured the number one position worldwide.
The marketing campaign is a clear departure from conventional video game promotions, being the first one of its kind in terms of cooperation with Netflix for an unreleased game. The footage, filmed entirely using the PlayStation 5 game, features the main characters Jason and Lucia wandering through the imaginary city of Vice City.
On YouTube, where the video was released after the exclusivity period of Netflix expired, the trailer had more than 17.7 million views on the official Rockstar Games channel alone. But each platform counts the number of views in a different way; Netflix counts each view of a household, while YouTube counts each play of the video.
The huge viewership shows strong commercial interest in GTA VI, which launches on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The previous entry in the series has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide, and analysts estimate the new game will be among the most profitable in entertainment history.
