Ilia Topuria breaks silence after Justin Gaethje defeat with emotional letter to son

Ilia Topuria has finally broken his silence about loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House, nearly three months after suffering the first defeat of his professional career.

Topuria wrote an emotional letter to his five-year-old son, Hugo. He posted a video on social media on Friday and read aloud his letter.

Tuporia said: “Hugo, I've been thinking about you these past few days. About what you felt when you saw me fall,” while admitting that it was difficult for him to see his son hurt by the result.

“As your father, I would have done anything to spare you that moment,” he said.

But Topuria said he was also glad they experienced it together because the defeat made them stronger.

The former UFC lightweight champion then turned the loss into a lesson for his son.

He told Hugo that people do not always win in life and that losing is not what matters. What matters, he said, is how a person reacts when things go wrong.

The message comes after Topuria spent months away from the spotlight following his brutal defeat to Gaethje.

Topuria entered the fight unbeaten and as the UFC lightweight champion but was stopped by Gaethje after his corner ended the fight before the fifth round.

The loss ended a 17-fight unbeaten run and cost Topuria his lightweight title.
