Truth behind King's letter for Harry, Meghan: ‘Alarm bells inside Palace'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were left in shock by the notice from Buckingham Palace, which reportedly had only come two minutes prior to the public announcement about their royal status.

The royal aides have insisted that the timing of the King’s letter, issued in the name of the Lord Chamberlain, was unrelated to the looming verdict for police protection for the Sussexes.

In the letter, the King had clarified that Harry and Meghan will remain “private citizens” and they do not represent the monarchy. Moreover, Charles will not be intervening in their security matters.

While Harry and Meghan themselves have maintained that they were returning as private citizens, there has been speculation over why the King felt the need to issue a statement in the first place.

One long-term friend of the King pointed out that there is chaos simmering behind Palace walls to have produced such a reaction.

“They didn’t need to issue guidance about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor when he ceased his royal life and gave up public duties, which suggests they have been spooked by the Sussexes,” the friend revealed to royal expert Richard Kay.

Moreover, there was worry that friends of Harry and Meghan have been “spoon-feeding friendly publications with details about their plans”.

“They’ve only been back a matter of days and can have barely unpacked but we keep hearing how they want to step up their charity work which would inevitably raise their public profile,” the source explained. “It’s exasperating.”

Figures close to the King were left irritated by the rumours of the Sussexes setting up a rival court in the UK, hence Charles was forced to take action before the matter escalated even further.

Richard stressed that the fact that Buckingham Palace needed to send the letter in the first place illustrates the degree of confusion and uncertainty Harry and Meghan’s sudden return to the UK has caused.
