Prince William stood out from European counterparts in black suit

Prince William’s appearance on Wednesday set him apart from some of his European counterparts.

The Prince of Wales was not wearing military uniform. The choice may have come as a surprise to those familiar with William’s own military background. 

Before taking on royal duties full-time, he served in the British Armed Forces and has previously worn uniform for major state occasions. 

At the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, for example, he appeared in his RAF No. 1 uniform, complete with the Garter Sash and RAF Pilot Wings.

This time, however, there was a specific reason behind his more understated appearance.

He does not hold the Order of St Olav, Norway’s highest honour, and therefore did not wear military uniform on the occasion. 

The prestigious order is awarded in recognition of exceptional service and achievements on behalf of Norway, while foreign heads of state may also receive the honour as a diplomatic courtesy.

Instead, the future King opted for a classic black suit that reflected the solemn nature of the occasion and continued sign of respect.
