Batman day 2026: Dark night takes over Sydney Opera House as DC celebrates worldwide

The annual Batman Day 2026 took place around the world on Saturday, September 19, when fans commemorated 87 years since the appearance of the Caped Crusader in Detective Comics.

As the main element of this year's celebration, Batman of Two Worlds, a one-shot comic, was released worldwide and is available from participating stores for $2.99. 

It includes a new story about Batman by writer Matt Fraction and artist Javi Fernández, along with an Absolute Batman story by Scott Snyder and Nick Derington. The stories revolve around theft and how the methods of justice used by each of these Batmen vary between the worlds.

"One problem, two solutions," said Fraction. "Every Batman has his way of doing things."

Warner Bros. and HBO Max in Sydney attracted thousands of people to the harbour as Batman made his appearance at the top of the Sydney Opera House sails in his signature pose at dusk. The impressive stunt became part of the worldwide "Rule the Night" theme, which encourages fans to embrace dusk as an adventure.

They could also earn four free paper masks – Batman, Absolute Batman, Hush Batman, and Dark Knight Returns Batman – created by Ryan Sook in the styles of Jiménez, Dragotta, Jim Lee, and Frank Miller. 

Five hardcovers were available in stores, including Batman Vol. 1: Daylight, Batman '89, which came with a movie code, and a special Dark Knight Returns version.

In the digital space, there were comics to read for free on DC Universe Infinite, such as Absolute Batman #1-3, and free LEGO Batman Batcave props for members with their WB Games accounts linked. 

Events took place in San Antonio, Austin, Savannah, Buenos Aires, Italy, and Brazil. The celebration takes place every year on the third Saturday of September.
