KARACHI: If you go by the clock at the KMC building in old town there are only 15 minutes left for the elections to end. A clock tower, the crowning glory of the magnificent building, has been showing the same time for the last three months—quarter to five.

The Victorian building was built in 1935 when the British ruled the sub-continent. It was called the Karachi Corporation then—or the Ghanta Ghar by locals.

In January 2007 the City District Government of Karachi celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the building during which it was renovated and its clock tower was renovated.

Elections for mayors and deputy mayors in the city are being conducted in this building. There is much hype around the elections this time as the city’s nominated mayor Waseem Akhtar is in prison.

Voting began at 9am today and will continue till 5pm.
