KARACHI: Local bodies’ members, including Mayor Wasim Akhtar, staged a protest against the lack of power and resources outside the Sindh Assembly on Friday.

The protesters marched towards the Sindh Assembly and tried to enter the premises, however, the gates were closed and a heavy contingent of police was deployed at the site.

Speaking to the protesters,  Akhtar targeted his remarks towards the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. He said, "you [PPP] have become the king of bad governance. You have destroyed Sindh and now you have come to destroy Karachi. But we, the elected representatives, will not let you destroy Karachi."

Reports of a woman fainting during the protest also emerged during the protest.

The protesters claimed that the government in the budget had failed to approve the schemes hatched by the local bodies’ representatives.

As a result of the protest march, the roads leading to Sindh Assembly were closed for traffic.

Earlier in a press conference regarding the budget on Wednesday, Akhtar had slammed the Sindh government for not including a single development scheme proposed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in the annual development programme 2017-2018.

He had stressed that Karachi has been repeatedly neglected in the Sindh budget. He also regretted that not a single scheme had been kept for Karachi’s District Central.
