KARACHI: Political leaders at the national conference held here under the auspices of Jamat-e-Islami demanded that the tribunal investigation into the incidents of May 12, 2007 be reactivated, Geo News reported Thursday.

The national conference held on the topic of May 12 violence and target killings in Karachi was attended by all the major religious and political parties of the country with the exception of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

The participants were of the view that if Karachi was not made a citadel of peace, then the rulers will have to face the reaction of the people in the next general elections.

In the presidential address, JI Amir Syed Munawar Hassan questioned the government as to what welfare has been extended to the people through the policy of reconciliation.

Former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said unless the issue of law and order was given serious attention, the reaction that would come from the people in the next elections would be well justified.

Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Zafar Iqbal Jhagra said those who orchestrated May 12 tragedy were part of both the Federal and provincial governments. The May 12 violence is repeated in Karachi every other day, he regretted.

Leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Hafiz Hussain Ahmed said all the parities claim that they had lost their workers in May 12 incidents, then ‘why is it that no investigation gets carried out?’
