Wrestler Inam Butt returns to hero's welcome in Pakistan

LAHORE: Pakistan’s most decorated wrestler Inam Butt returned home on Wednesday, a day after his stunning win at the ANOC World Beach Games in Doha.

Inam, 30, remained undefeated throughout the day in 90kg weight category of wrestling competition to outclass all his opponents.

In the final bout, Inam was once 0-2 down against Georgian Dato Marsagishvili but things changed in last 15 seconds of the bout when Inam overpowered his opponent and took him down to clinch five important points to win the fight with a score of 5-2.

The gold medalist was welcomed to the beat of drums, flowers and chants from other fellow wrestlers at Lahore airport.

The seasoned wrestler bagged gold after a shock victory over Georgia’s Dato Marsagishvili in the final at Doha on Monday.

Many of his supporters, donors and his fellow wrestlers from his hometown of Gujranwala flocked to receive the prized wrestler.

Speaking to the media, Butt said the prize was his fourth international medal and that he was very proud to represent his country.

Furthermore, he recalled the difficulties he faced and despite the lack of resources, the wrestler said that the support he received from media, as well as other sports boards, pushed him forward.

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik also took to social media to congratulate the gold medalist.

Butt now has his sights set to bag maximum medals in the South Asian Games in the Philippines next month.
