KARACHI: A Chinese national allegedly assaulted a traffic police officer, leaving him with a bloodied face, over being told not to leave his vehicle in the no-parking zone here in the city's Qayyumabad area, authorities said Wednesday.

According to the station house officer (SHO) at the Korangi Industrial Area police station, Rana Haseeb, the incident occurred outside a famed departmental store near Qayyumabad Chowrangi where the Chinese man had come for shopping with his Pakistani driver.

SHO Haseeb added that when the Chinese national's driver parked the vehicle outside the store, the traffic police officer showed them the no-parking board and told them not to park the car there.

The traffic police officer began to take the car away using a lifter, after which my employer started beating the officer badly.

Then, in a fit of anger, the enraged Chinese man tried to shove the officer and assaulted him in the process. He also punched the officer in the face before passersby and other police officials intervened.

The man's driver said he was following his employer’s orders. “I had parked the car in a no-parking zone,” he admitted. “The officer asked me to move the car; however, my employer did not let me.”

The driver added that the assault came as a response to the car being allegedly removed forcefully. “The traffic police officer began to take the car away using a lifter, after which my employer started beating the officer badly."

On the other hand, footage from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera indicated otherwise, showing that no lifter was used during the incident.

The SHO said a police team reached the site immediately after they received information on the incident, arrested the Chinese citizen, and shifted the injured officer to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

A first information report (FIR) was filed at the Korangi Industrial Area police station on the wounded officer's. It includes Section 337 and 353. The Chinese man was put in a lock-up after his arrest and was said to be presented in the court on Thursday for remand.

Police said they also seized the car.
