Prince William and Princess Kate left royal fans pleasantly surprised on Sunday when they released a St David’s Day greeting filmed at Frogmore House.

In a first for the Princess, the couple delivered the message entirely in Welsh, paying tribute to the nation’s patron saint and giving social media watchers a rare treat.

Once translated, the message was heartfelt. William praised Wales for its “rich history and wonderful people,” while Kate, spoke of how “close the country is to our hearts” and wished everyone a day full of celebrations with family and friends.

Royal observers were quick to applaud Kate’s debut in the notoriously tricky language.

“Beautiful that you shared this. Welsh is a tough but beautiful language,” one fan commented, while another added, “Think Catherine should take up learning Welsh, she did fab!”

The performance also earned praise from a former royal insider. Dai Davies, head of royal protection between 1994 and 1998, described the couple’s effort as “truly admirable.”

He added that he was confident their efforts would be warmly received in Wales.
