Anthropic disables Fable and Mythos AI after US bans foreign access: Here's what we know

Anthropic has disabled all access to its newly introduced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, on Friday, June 12, 2026.

The move comes after the U.S. Commerce Department raised national security concerns about its export to foreign nationals.

Anthropic released a statement on its portal and said it was ordered to suspend foreign nationals from using Claude Fable 5, a program that the company self-described as “too powerful.”

“The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5, and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance,” the AI company added.

Claude Fable 5 is a version of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos, a competitor to rival AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

However, Anthropic highlighted that U.S. national security officials hadn’t figured out the specific concerns.

“Our understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or ‘jailbreaking’ Fable 5,” the company wrote.

For context, Anthropic and the Trump administration have been at loggerheads for quite some time.

Both parties have been engaged in a legal fight over an order to restrict government agencies from using Anthropic’s powerful AI tools.
