Trump's Justice Department interference triggers legal crisis

U.S. President Trump’s aggressive interference in Justice Department operations has created a cascade of legal and political problems, with three major crises unfolding within a single week.

Trouble started Wednesday when lawyers for the former FBI Director James Comey informed the court that Secret Service agents who interviewed their client in connection with a picture on the beach which showed seashells arranged as "86 47" were directed by Trump's representatives to transmit a report of the interview to President Trump at his convenience while he was travelling on Air Force One. The interviews were "hot stuff on the plane", and the president was "very interested."

The disclosure has raised serious concerns about the president’s use of law enforcement personnel to advance personal political objectives and potentially obstruct ongoing investigations. Legal experts warn that the interference could lead to sanctions in the Comey case and complicate a separate criminal prosecution.

Trump's unprecedented personal interference is threatening the Justice Department's traditionally independent nature, which has been sustained for decades by all U.S. presidents, regardless of party. The confirmation of Trump's candidate for attorney general has also been compromised due to senators' fears regarding the president's intention to use the powers of federal law enforcement against his political rivals. The growing number of instances of interference in the operations of the department has led to bipartisan reviews of its independence.

It should be noted that the disclosure of the details of the Comey interview is considered one of the most open cases of using the powers of law enforcement agencies for political purposes by President Trump.

Till now, the White House has not commented on these specific allegations yet. Meanwhile, the Justice Department has maintained that all investigations are conducted as per established protocols, though critics argue the recent disclosures suggest otherwise.
