OpenAI faces criticism after hosting content creators at a $2,000-per-night resort, with social media labelling the event as “dystopian” and accusing the company of greenwashing.
Over the weekend, OpenAI hosted around 30 influencers at Wildflower Farms, a luxury resort in New York’s Hudson Valley.
The event, dubbed “OpenAI summer camp,” included farm-to-table dining, workshops on ChatGPT tools, and activities including beekeeping sessions.
The famous influencers included Grace McCarrick (career and business creator), Megan Lieu (tech and career creator), Avni Barman (career and business creator), Justyn Berkovits (business creator), Sreya Halder (software and fashion creator), and others.
However, the event received backlash from netizens who refer to the event as “dystopian.” Journalist Taylor Lorenz noted on X (formerly known as Twitter) and responded to the critics, saying, “My morals were not compromised. I am supremely excited about AI and the opportunities it offers to our species.”
Defending the event, OpenAI’s spokesperson told Business Insider: “Creators are an important part of our community and how people get information and learn about our products today.”
The reaction is similar to previous instances such as the 2023 visit to China by influencers for Shein, which was criticized for whitewashing labor problems. The AI companies are accused of increasing pressure due to increased prices of electricity, increased use of water, and job loss as a result of the rapid expansion of data centers in the United States.
There was no confirmation from OpenAI on the payment of participants and the covering of travel costs.
