Scientists produced the world's first genetically modified dogs, which will enable individuals that experience extremely serious dog allergies to have a favorite dog at home, free from experiencing allergic reactions.

Gene editing technology called CRISPR is what scientists utilized to delete the gene that creates Can F 1, which is known as the most significant source of dog allergies.

Geneticists, including scientist Matt Walker (who had a severe dog allergy) worked on this project. Walker never lived with his family pet due to his allergies until he received Bailey (the first dog), whom he now lives with. Since receiving Bailey, Walker has reported that he does not experience the severe allergic reactions he did when living with dogs prior to Bailey.

First, geneticists edited the reproductive cells from a female beagle so she would no longer produce Can F1. Then, the reproductive cells were combined into an embryo. The beagles were cloned after the embryo was implanted in her uterus. 

After birth, both beagles underwent testing for health. Researchers concluded that both dogs appeared healthy; there was no indication of physical anomalies. Additionally, there was no sign of unintended mutations during the study.

This breakthrough may give hope to many individuals around the world that enjoy owning or caring for dogs but cannot do so due to allergies. Geneticists are hopeful that the process developed to create these genetically engineered dogs will ultimately assist in creating service dogs that do not elicit allergic reactions.

These genetically engineered dogs will not become available to every individual right away. Additional research will be required to find out if the effects of the gene edits remain stable throughout each animal's lifespan and if similar outcomes can occur within other dog breeds.
