Duchess Sophie picks up laser rifle as charity celebrates her ‘defining moment'

The Duchess of Edinburgh revealed an unexpectedly competitive side during a visit to an indoor ski centre.

Sophie puts her aim to the test trying a laser rifle exploring the work of the Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team.

Sophie visited the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, to meet athletes, coaches, volunteers and members of the charity’s board.

After watching athletes tackle the artificial snow, the Duchess pulled on her ski equipment and headed onto the slope herself.

Elizabeth Winfield, AFPST’s chief operating officer, welcomed the Duchess and introduced her to the organisation’s programmes and the people involved in delivering them.

Speaking after Sophie’s visit, Winfield described the Duchess’s patronage as “a defining moment” for the charity.

She said it would strengthen its ability to expand its work, reach more veterans and continue providing programmes designed to make a lasting difference.
