How King Oyo of Uganda's Tooro kingdom died?

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended the throne of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom at just three years old, has died at 34.

The world’s youngest reigning monarch was receiving medical treatment in the United States due to his critical illness.

He passed away at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, August 27, the Tooro Kingdom’s prime minister confirmed early Friday. His death was announced by Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiiree Akiiki, who described it as an “immeasurable loss” but offered no specific details about his illness.

Oyo inherited the throne after the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995. Oyo was crowned on September 12, 1995, as king at the tender age of three years. Thus, Guinness World Records recorded him as the youngest monarch of the world. The regency was in charge before Oyo turned 18, after which a formal coronation was done in 2010.

Although the country is a republic and a presidential state in Uganda, the traditional monarchies such as Tooro still have great cultural significance. King Oyo was in charge of over two million people as the 13th king of a kingdom formed in the early 19th century.

King Oyo, who was never married, was considered the most eligible bachelor of Uganda. He advocated for youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation, and awareness of HIV/AIDS.
