Princess Anne turns her attention to sheepdogs at at major countryside

Princess Anne attended the ISDS International Supreme Sheepdog Trials at Daylesford.

As Patron of the International Sheep Dog Society, she enjoyed the prestigious competition on its 120th anniversary, watching handlers and their dogs from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland compete for the Supreme title.

Earlier she had a remarkable reunion with the woman who taught her to ride as a young child, before heading to one of the biggest events in the sheepdog calendar.

The Princess Royal came face to face with Barbara Rosen, now 94, during a visit to The Nicky day centre in Crumpsall, where Manchester Jewish Community Care was marking its 75th anniversary.

Their meeting brought back memories from more than seven decades ago, when Rosen worked at Windsor Castle and became one of the first female grooms there.

Rosen recalled that Anne was just three years old and her brother, King Charles, was five when she began working with the young royals in the 1950s.

“I used to ride with them and teach them how to ride,” she said, remembering the ponies William and Greensleeves and the journeys she made with the Royal Family and their horses to Sandringham and Balmoral.

The former groom said the reunion was particularly special because the memories came flooding back for both of them.

“We both remembered one another,” Rosen said, describing their conversation as a “really nice chat”.
