How did Bob Mackie, legendary costume designer, die?

Bob Mackie, the Emmy- and Tony-winning costume designer who dressed some of entertainment’s biggest stars, has died at 87.

The news of his demise is confirmed by his Instagram page.

The statement reads: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a fashion and costume designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever.”

Born in 1939 in Los Angeles, Mackie realised early on what he wanted to do. Starting his career drawing costumes for designers, Mackie had his breakthrough with Mitzi Gaynor, who hired him for her Las Vegas show. He then worked on The Carol Burnett Show, designing about 50 costumes per week until he met Cher on the program – the collaboration that became the signature of his career.

Through his career, Mackie received 32 nominations and nine wins of Emmy Awards and a Tony Award for The Cher Show in 2018. In addition, he was nominated for an Academy Award three times. Many celebrities like Zendaya, Miley Cyrus, and Anya Taylor-Joy raided his archive for red carpet appearances.

Mackie is survived by the memory of his son Robin, his longtime partner Ray Aghayan having died in 2011. Asked if he’d ever retire, he said simply, “I hope not.” His cause of death has not been revealed yet.
