King Charles invites fresh storm during critical time for monarchy: ‘too soon'

Buckingham Palace’s unprecedented statement on behalf of King Charles may have set of a series of events that the royal family cannot afford at this point.

The royals have still not recovered from the damage Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has done for the monarchy’s image and the family drama with the Sussexes is also not helping to the cause.

Hence, in what could be assumed to be a “knee-jerk” reaction to his ex-brother-in-law’s new book, Charles brought on a new storm. Rightfully so, the first small excerpt from the book was enough to gauge an unexpected statement from Buckingham Palace. And things appear to just be getting started.

There was no early copy of Swan Song: Diana, My Sister sent to the Palace, hence when an excerpt detailing a heated call between the then-Prince Charles and Diana’s brother Charles Spencer was described.

Talking about whether Princes William and Harry, then 15 and 12, would walk behind their mother’s casket during the funeral procession, the father of two “continued his stream of anger” and later added that the world would forget about Diana “soon enough”.

The Palace said about, noting that the King is “mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss”.

One British broadcaster Jacob Rees-Mogg posed the question whether Charles Spencer is following his nephew Prince Harry as “somebody who wishes to wash family laundry in public, the dirty linen in public, who has recollections that others don’t recognise, and wishes to damage a family which he is at least to some extent part of?”

When Diana passed, the royals including Elizabeth II “became unpopular” at the time and “there was a worry practically that the gates of Buckingham Palace could be stormed”.

“At that point, the late queen handled it beautifully and made a wonderful speech that calmed everything down. But does the King need to do that?” Jacob opined at GB News.

“Will his words about Lord Spencer be sufficient, or is this another problem for the monarchy piled on top of the former Prince Andrew and, of course, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex now back stirring things up in the Cotswolds.”

Despite what the views for Harry and William are, Diana was a beloved figure among the Britons and across the world. Even with the years of PR that rebuild the reputations of Charles and Camilla together, a bitter revelation from the painful past could ignite a fire that may be very tough to put out.
