Duchess Sophie holds private video meeting after departing for major forum trip

After departing to The Hague for a major international forum focused on women, peace and security, the Duchess of Edinburgh has continued her work behind the scenes. 

The Palace confirmed that on Monday, 28 September, Sophie held a meeting via video link with Dr Denis Mukwege.

Dr Denis is founder and medical director of Panzi Hospital and Foundation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sophie’s latest meeting also comes with a personal connection to the region. 

Her last visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo came in 2025, when she travelled to the country at the request of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office as the UK marked the 25th anniversary of Women, Peace and Security.

It could be seen as a continuation of the work she has been carrying forward around women affected by conflict and violence.

The conversation came just days after the Duchess attended the OSCAR Foundation Ball at London’s Nobu Hotel, where she spoke about her experience with the charity in Mumbai and her work supporting children and young people.
