Rockstar Games has pulled back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto VI, revealing a breathtaking level of detail that promises to make Leonida the most immersive open world the studio has ever designed.
Rockstar Games confirmed that GTA VI will feature dynamic, localized weather, including hurricanes and tropical storms.
As described by Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s VP of art for lighting and rendering, the studio “re-engineered” its weather system to make conditions persistent and localized. Players can bask in sunshine in one region while watching a storm roll across the distance.
Rain leaves behind puddles, wet surfaces, and even realistic rainbows. Hurricanes bring heavy clouds, strong winds, and dramatic lightning.
The studio also confirmed that GTA VI’s map is twice the size of GTA V, spanning six distinct regions, including Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gelhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.
Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut said the team was “obsessed about every part,” delivering unprecedented density and hand-crafted detail.
Other major announcements include the introduction of more than 170 animal species, a fast-travel ride-share system with optional doomscrolling on Snapmatic, and dozens of side activities like scuba diving, mini golf, base jumping, and kayaking. There will also be hunting and animal tracking, echoing Red Dead Redemption 2’s depth.
Rockstar Games says it aims to “overdeliver” on sky-high expectations when GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
