Attack on Hamid Mir ‘assault on freedom of media’: Sharjeel
KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Information, Sharjeel Inam Memon Saturday condemned attack on Hamid Mir and termed assault on journalist of any media group as attack on freedom of media.

Addressing a seminar organized by the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors CPNE on World Press Freedom Day, he said in current critical situation of country all state institutions including media should refrain from hurling attacks at each other.

He said he did not support Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s stance and said that political parties should desist from doing things which were against freedom of speech.

Sharjeel said his party was aware of rigging in 2013 elections but it accepted the results for the survival of democracy.

Nazir Leghari of daily Jang said even the five-year-long sensor of former president Ziaul Haq failed to muzzle the voice of journalists. “The journalists could neither be scared in the past and nor would they be frightened in future,”
