NAB takes former Balochistan Public Service Commission chairman in custody

QUETTA: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has taken into custody former Chairman of the Balochistan Public Service Commission (BPSC) Ashraf Magsi and two deputy directors over allegations of corruption, sources told Geo News on Monday.

According to sources, Magsi and deputy directors Abdul Wahid and Niaz Kakar were arrested over abuse of power while making appointments. 

Magsi is accused of appointing two of her daughters in education department and recruiting officers above grade 17 in violation of merit. He is also accused of embezzling funds worth millions of rupees.

NAB submitted reference against Magsi last week, after which the BPSC’s deputy director examination Abdul Wahid and deputy director secrecy Kakar also came under arrest. Both of them have been taken into custody for aiding Magsi.

The incident came after the arrest of provincial Finance Secretary Mushtaq Ahmed Raisani, an influential bureaucrat in Balochistan, over embezzlement of billions of rupees. He was arrested on May 6 after NAB recovered more than Rs730 million from his residence.

In November 2014, Governor Baloshistan Mohammad Khan Achakzai terminated the appointment of Magsi over charges of irregularities and corruption. NAB had launched an inquiry against Magsi for recruiting officers in violation of merit in 2012.
