Law enforcers identify group behind attack on traffic policemen

KARACHI: The suspects involved in the killing of two traffic policemen in Karachi's Ayesha Manzil area belonged to a banned organisation, police said on Thursday.

The attackers belonged to a banned organisation and was being operated from abroad, investigative sources said, adding that the group's militants carry out attacks and flee the country later on.

Deputy Inspector General of Police-West Feroz Shah confirmed that the suspect involved in the attack on traffic policemen came to Karachi a few days ago.

It has been reported that the same group was also involved in previous attacks on policemen.

The traffic policemen identified as Shakil Ahmed and Mohammed Akram were performing their duties near Ayesha Manzil on May 21 when they were targeted.

Following protocol, both were wearing their bullet-proof jackets and one was armed with an SMG. According to eyewitness accounts, two men dressed in all black and wearing helmets came riding motorcycle and attacked the policemen.

This was the year's first shooting that targeted traffic policemen. In 2015, six traffic policemen were killed in as many attacks by unknown assailants.
