LAHORE: Deafening sounds of gunfire echoed in Lahore’s old city on Sunday when well-wishers of Balaj Tipu resorted to celebratory firing after Tipu was granted bail in a murder case.

Tipu, son of late Arif Ameer alias Tipu Truckanwala, is nominated in a murder case alongside his wife and several bodyguards at the Gawalmandi Police Station. The murder is said to have been the result of a property dispute.

As news of Tipu’s bail reached supporters of the ‘businessman’, they could not hold back their zeal and fired automatic weapons into the air from the second floor of their house in Shalmi area of the city.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and ordered the DIG Operations to take appropriate action against those responsible.

He said no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

Cases against aerial firing can be registered under the relevant section of the Pakistan Penal Code as well as the Anti-Terrorism Act for endangering lives.

Balaj’s father, Tipu Truckanwala, was shot dead in the parking area of Allama Iqbal International Airport in January 2010 after arriving from Dubai. The incident was said to be the result of a gang-related rivalry.
