Lahore blast: Inoperative CCTV camera handicaps JIT investigation

LAHORE: Inoperative CCTV cameras at the site of the recent suicide attack in Lahore which claimed the lives of at least 26 people, including nine police personnel, has created a hindrance for the Joint Investigation Team formed to probe the incident, sources informed Geo News.

As the JIT started collecting evidence from the blast site near Ferozepur Road, the team decided to proceed by taking into account pictures and videos from the CCTV cameras installed nearby under the 'Safe City Project', however, it soon found that the cameras were out of order.

Sources said that with the help of CCTV footage, the investigators wanted to ascertain the identity of the attacker and his facilitators but due to the unexpected glitch, the investigators are facing issues in carrying out the investigation.

The JIT has taken into account testimonies of eyewitnesses and the injured; while the team is waiting to receive the medical report of the alleged suicide attacker.

The investigation team comprises Punjab additional home secretary, officials of the counter-terrorism department, police and intelligence agencies.

Earlier, reports said the suicide bomber was around 16-17 years of age and arrived in a rickshaw. Moreover, the First Information Report (FIR) on Monday's suicide attack states that the attacker had two accomplices.

The FIR, registered against three unidentified person states, the bomber bid farewell to two people before approaching policemen resting under the shade of a tree and detonating the bomb.

The suicide bomber traversed from Gajju Matta town to the site of incident – Kot Lakhpat Sabzi Mandi—in a rickshaw, intelligence officials had disclosed further.
