LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday lamented that the man who made Pakistan an atomic power is now behind the bars.

Speaking to the press outside Kot Lakhpat Jail, where former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is incarcerated, Iqbal said that it was unfortunate that the man who gave the country the multi-billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project had been ousted from power.

"Nawaz and Shehbaz are present in the country. The entire party is in contact with the senior leadership. There is no leadership crisis," the former interior minister said, adding, "In fact there has been surge in the PML-N's popularity."

The senior PML-N leader said that the people have realised the government has nothing to offer to them except targetting Nawaz's party.

"We are giving a substantive time to the government to perform so that the people can know that Imran Khan is a liar," he said. "PM Imran used to say that the Sharif family laundered Rs100 billion, the claim was not proven in all three references."

Iqbal lamented that no prime minister left the office with dignity in the country's 71-year history.

"Those who voted for PTI are praying for the tenure to end as soon as possible," he claimed.

Nawaz met his family during visiting hours today. His mother, daughter Maryam Nawaz, son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar met with him earlier today while the party leaders have sent a written request to the jail authorities for the meeting.
