An Indian lawyer on Thursday lodged an FIR against as many as 50 celebrities in the country's  Bihar state for penning an open letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over increasing incidents of mob lynching.

According to local media, the complaint against the celebrities was filed by lawyer S. K. Ojha in Muzaffarpur area of the state.

The FIR includes names of Bollywood actress Konkana Sen, director Maniratnam, Aparna Sen, Ramchandra Guha and many more. According to district police, the case was filed at Sardar police station on the orders of the local court.

The order to file the case were given by a  Chief Judicial Magistrate after the lawyer had filed a petition in his court.

In the letter, the celebrities urged the Indian prime minister to act upon the inhumane lynching of Muslims and Dalits along with other minorities and called for immediate action.

The letter stressed that "Jai Shri Ram" was no less than a "provocative war cry". Furthermore, it stated that there was "no democracy without dissent".

Outraged over the letter, Ojha filed the appeal citing that the 50 signatories supposedly "tarnished the image of the country and undermined the impressive performance of the Prime Minister"as well as "supporting secessionist tendencies".
