Meghan Markle had a shocking reaction to Queen Elizabeth's offer.
When the Duchess of Sussex stepped into the royal family after marrying Prince Harry, Queen Elizabeth suggested that Duchess Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh would be "ideal mentor" for Meghan.
Meghan tied the knot to Harry in 2018. The former Suits actress left her acting career when she became part of the royal family.
Gyles Brandreth revealed in his book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait that the wife of Prince Harry made it "clear" she didn't need Sophie's help.
As per the author, the late Queen thought Meghan would find it difficult to adjust in the royal life at first. Therefore, in order to help Meghan she suggested her daughter-in-law, wife of Prince Edward to help her.
"The Queen (who, of course, had seen it all before) understood that Harry's girl might find adjusting to Royal life 'challenging to begin with' (as she put it). 'It is very jolty, but you soon get used to it'," Gyles wrote in his book. "That was Her Majesty's experience going back many years."
He went on to add, "To help Meghan, the Queen suggested that her daughter-in-law, Sophie Wessex, would be an ideal mentor."
"'Sophie can help show you the ropes,' said the Queen. "Meghan made it clear that she did not feel she needed Sophie's help. She had Harry," Gyles has written.
It is worth mentioning that Meghan and Sophie share similar experiences as they both underwent huge transition upon joining the royal family. Sophie, wife of Edward, belonged to a middle class family and founded a PR firm before becoming a royal member.
Similarly, Meghan also comes from a middle-class background, she also left her Hollywood career upon joining the family.
Notably, Duchess Sophie previously spoke to The Sunday Times and compared her experiences to Meghan Markle's.
"Remember I'd had five years to adjust [to royal life]. And for our six-month engagement, I was even staying at Buckingham Palace. Not that you necessarily know how it will pan out," she told the outlet.
Sophie also commented on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's departure from the royal family, saying, "I just hope they will be happy."
However, she also mentioned that the royal family makes sure to try and "help any new members of the family."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their royal roles in 2020. Now, they live in California with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
