Sarah Jessica Parker has slammed fans for having 'double standards' for judging women’s lead character differently than men’s.
The Hollywood actress is best known for playing Carrie Bradshaw’s role in S** And The City and subsequent series Just Like That.
While chatting with Huffpost, the 60-year-old actress candidly reflected on all the backlashes that she received for the role.
The romantic-comedy series revolves around the love life, friendship and personal journey of four women Bradshaw, Charlotte York Goldenblatt, Samantha Jones, and Miranda Hobbes, in New York.
“It’s always interesting to me that [Carrie is] so condemned,” Parker said. “But a male lead on a show can be a murderer, and people love him.”
Highlighting the double standard, she continued, “It’s always interesting to me that [this is] so condemned, but a male lead on a show can be a murderer, and people love him. And if a woman has an affair, or behaves poorly, or spends money foolishly […] there’s a kind of punitive response to it.”
“I ultimately think that all those feelings are pretty fantastic. That kind of connection and those kinds of strong feelings, both positive and negative, are pretty wonderful."
“People are kind of captive in those moments to something, and I think that’s perfectly fine. I just think, it’s just interesting, the ways in which we judge women, and not men,” Sarah Jessica Parker added before exiting chat.
