Who was Saif al-Islam Gaddafi?
Saif al-Islam was well-known in the North African country, especially for his role in shaping policy before 2011, although he receded from the public limelight in recent years.
Saif al-Islam was given a death sentence in 2015 by a Libyan court in his absence for suppressing peaceful protests during the country’s 2011 revolution that ended his father’s rule.
The International Criminal Court also charged him provisionally for alleged crimes against humanity, a case his lawyers failed to dispute.
Saif al-Islam registered as a presidential candidate in 2021 for a December vote that met with political turmoil at the time and bore no fruit.
