Duke of Edinburgh calls on Britain to fly Red Ensign in tribute to Merchant Seafarers

The Duke of Edinburgh has issued a heartfelt appeal to communities across the UK to come together for Merchant Navy Day on 3 September, encouraging people to fly the Red Ensign in recognition of the men and women who keep the nation supplied.

As President of The Seafarers' Charity, Prince Edward praised the dedication of merchant seafarers and the crucial role they play in Britain's daily life, particularly during times of international uncertainty.

In his annual message, the Duke called on the public to show their appreciation by raising the Red Ensign or helping spread awareness of the Merchant Navy's work.

"This is an excellent opportunity to show our seafarers and their families how much we all value them," he said.

His message also said that recent events in the Arabian Gulf, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz have demonstrated how heavily the UK depends on its Merchant Navy to keep vital goods moving safely around the world.

He pointed out that merchant vessels transport around 95 per cent of Britain's trade, making seafarers an essential part of the country's economy and everyday life, despite much of their work taking place far from public view.

Merchant Navy Day is observed every year on 3 September, honours the service and sacrifice of merchant seafarers past and present, while recognising the industry's continuing importance to the United Kingdom.

He thanked everyone planning to support the occasion, expressing his gratitude on behalf of The Seafarers' Charity and encouraging people across the country to stand behind the nation's maritime community.
