Max Greenfield opens up on joining 'White Lotus' season 4: 'So stressful'

Max Greenfield says joining The White Lotus for its fourth season has come with an unexpected challenge that has nothing to do with the acting itself: keeping the show's notoriously tightly guarded plot details under wraps.

Appearing on Today with Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones to promote his new Netflix dramedy Don't Say Good Luck, the New Girl and The Neighborhood alum opened up about the pressure of joining Mike White's Emmy-winning anthology series, which has built its reputation partly on maintaining strict secrecy around each season's storylines and character fates. 

Greenfield described the experience as demanding in a way that's had little to do with a relaxing shoot on the French Riviera, admitting the show's confidentiality culture has made it "so stressful" to stay tight-lipped about his role.

Season 4 of The White Lotus, which began filming in April at locations including the Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez, is set during the Cannes Film Festival and follows the anthology's established format of tracking a new group of hotel guests and staff across a single fraught week. 

Greenfield joins a starry ensemble that includes Helena Bonham Carter, Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Chris Messina and Sandra Bernhard, among others, with his character reportedly named Mitchell, though further plot details remain undisclosed per the show's usual practice.

The White Lotus has won the Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for each of its first two seasons, a track record built in part on the mystery surrounding who each season's characters will turn out to be, and how their stories will end. 

Season 4 does not yet have a confirmed premiere date, though production is expected to continue through October, pointing toward a likely 2027 release.
