Palace unveils special coronation gift for monarch with over 700 diamonds

King Charles’s Coronation was an historic event as he had waited for 70 years for his ascension to the throne.

During the 2023 ceremony, Charles had received precious items as gifts from notable figures from across the world. However, separated by more than a century Edward VII experienced a similar fate.

Not as much as Charles III, but Edward had also had to wait until he was 59 to be crowned after his mother, Queen Victoria’s 63-year-reign.

Revisiting the past in the ongoing exhibition in Scotland, the Palace unveiled a rare treasure that Edward had received from India during his coronation.

The Maharaja of Jaipur, Sawai Madha Singh Bahadur, had presented a dazzling sword to the newly-crowned monarch.

“There are 719 diamonds on this sword and scabbard!” the Royal Collection Trust reveals. “The sword was a Coronation gift to King Edward VII in 1902.”

An expert revealed that the insets were unlike any work that the Europeans had ever seen since the diamonds were not as deep as seen, instead they were slivers of it.

They had silver foil dished and put behind them to have them reflect the light and added luminosity.

The Royal team revealed that the public can see the sword in person at the ‘The Edwardians: Age of Elegance’ at The King’s Gallery in Edinburgh. It is open until December 6, 2026.
